| This game would have upset me had I got it for Christmas 15 years ago for my Megadrive. I would have felt ripped-off had I just purchased this for £3 for my mobile phone. If I'd downloaded this from a java/flash games website I would have very quickly lamented the wasted bandwidth and closed the window. The fact that Alien Hominid features on a downloadable flash game website isn't surprising. Being honest the gameplay there isn't all that different to this full price effort. The control mechanics are stiff; feeling like they have been ripped straight out of an amateur web game. And all too quickly I felt I had paid a lot of money for very little game. I've been a keen supporter of the 2D genre throughout the next-gen 3D onslaught, and I must admit that the graphics are creative and amusing. But the gameplay is so repetitious by modern standards (and by old standards actually) and so unforgivingly difficult (you often re-generate in impossible situations meaning multiple lives are lost consecutively) that inspite of its 2D appearance, it seems like yet another game where style presides over content. If this had come out for the Megadrive or SNES it would've got 10 for graphics, and an overall of 7. Why? Because even back then, there were far better games within this genre. So ultimately, if you wish to spend £25 on a superb multiplayer 2D shoot 'em up, hunt down an old Megadrive and a copy of Gunstar Heroes. It really is a lot better. |
