Summary

Girl power (or if you prefer, woman power) gets a goofy boost in My Super Ex-Girlfriend, a breezy rom-com that's as fun as it is forgettable. As devised by former Simpsons writer Don Payne and directed by comedy veteran Ivan (Ghostbusters) Reitman, the premise is certainly promising, and much of that promise is gamely fulfilled. When a New York building designer named Matt (Luke Wilson) discovers that his new girlfriend Jenny (Uma Thurman) is actually a crime-fighting, disaster-solving superhero named G-Girl who's also needy, neurotic, and unpredictably volatile, he realises he's got to dump her as politely as possible or face the potentially deadly consequences. Since he's really in love with a cute colleague (Anna Faris), and since the arch-villain Professor Bedlam (Eddie Izzard) has been in love with G-Girl since they were outcast pals in high school, you can easily figure out where the comedy is going. But getting there is surprisingly enjoyable, given the rather flat execution of a pretty good idea. The shark-tossing scene is a highlight, and other memorable scenes compensate for Reitman's embrace of a bitchy female stereotype that's either insulting or truthful, depending on your own romantic experience as the dumper or dumpee. Rainn Wilson (from the American version of The Office) performs the obligatory sidekick duties, and comedian Wanda Sykes is just plain annoying in a shrill and unnecessary role. Silly? You bet. Go in expecting that, and you won't be disappointed. --Jeff Shannon

My Super Ex Girlfriend

Want to escape reality for a couple of hours, relax, have a laugh, take yourself to another place? Let this film do it for you. It is witty, daft and sheer escapism, with great actors (Eddie Izzard steals the show) and has a "good-feeling" escapism throughout.

"Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a crazy ex with a shark"

This Hollywood comedy explores an interesting idea - what happens when a superhero starts a romance with someone? - After all, it's not likely to be a 'normal' relationship.

Luke Wilson is the strongest cast member as the slightly awkward yet lovable Matt, and his office chemistry with colleague Hannah is the most compelling aspect to the film. When he starts seeing Jenny Johnson, A.K.A the superhero "G-Girl" things soon start to turn sour when her jealousy and over-the-top neurotic oddness taint the initial novelty of dating a world famous legend.

My Super Ex Girlfriend gives us an interesting insight into the daily grind of a superhero's life, and the complications surrounding relationships. As with all superhero films, she has a nemesis - only he doesn't seem that evil, and though I like Eddie Izzard - he seems to dither between having a poor American accent, and not bothering to try one at all!

The film contains a few comedy moments which were no doubt a good idea at the time, but seems at best mildly amusing when you watch them. In fact, I get the impression that after the initial idea, a few scenes were conceived and the rest of the film hurredly scripted around them.

In a nutshell: Kevin Smith has since said that he had a similar idea for a film but never got round to writing it. It's a shame as I'm sure it would have been better than this. Only one character is convincing, the humour is pretty flat and relies on the same jokes being recycled throughout the film, and by the end of it you feel a bit underwhelmed. An intriguing concept poorly executed.

Conventinal love story with superhero 'twist'

When Matt (Wilson) finds out his girlfriend is G-Girl (Thurman) he dumps her and finds his world turned upside down

Batman, Superman, Spider-man and Ironman all have similarities. There is a love interest looming somewhere in the proceedings. So told from the point of view from the superhero's boyfriend, does this slight difference entertain and offer a diverse take on a superhero's life? Does it give us that enthrallment and energetic motive? No.

Starting off and we are thrust right into Hollywood convention. Stereotypical geek can't hit it off with a woman until a lucky break has him on a date with the hottest girl on the planet etc. Problems arise (surprise) and the relationship ends and he finds comfort elsewhere (another big wow) in the form of realisation of one's true feelings but not before a kryptonite soaked replica enters.

Spider-man tackles real life problems, The Dark Knight enthrals politically and darkly and Ironman simply makes you laugh and entertains right through. All have love scenarios and are handled well but diving into a conventional storyline and being star driven does not do this 2006 picture any favours.

Uma Thurman you have to love in Pulp Fiction. Uma Thurman you have to fear in Kill Bill. Uma you have to, um, sympathize with here? It's hard to pin point what the actual message of G-Girl is. Her real life alter ego Jenny is a neurotic analytical mess whilst her superhero can do all the conventional tricks like lifting heavy objects and burn up fishes with laser vision. Thurman's muddled portrayal of a woman who doesn't seem to get a break is hard to feel sorry for and considering the strain and message of responsibility to a superhero so well conveyed in Spider-Man 2, it is irrelevant. Yes, it has all been done before.

The film gives a slight twist come the middle when you think the film will go one way but this twist doesn't come as much of a surprise when all is simple formula at the end.

The appeal of this film was the consequence of dumping a superhero and the challenges they face in real life and given that this failed, there is more disappointment when you think the film will be enjoyable and funny anyway. But tackling romance, fantasy, comedy and drama genres is simply too much.

Reitman's direction is also some of the worst you will ever see as we never see the characters in an uncharismatic and surprising manner. No experimentation but conformity to a tried and tested formula, much like the pathetic and obvious narrative

3/10

Wife hated but I thought okay

My wife watched this on her own and hated it, one of the worst films she has ever seen apparently, I watched it a few days later and thought it was okay. It would never win an oscar but there are a few laughs in there, I'm a big fan of Eddie Izzard and loved his cameo and as for the idea of Uma breaking my bed.....

Embarassingly bad!

This film goes from boring to silly to stupid to ridiculous. Don't watch unless you're really bored and have nothing better to do! How Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson are not embarrassed about this, I cannot understand!
